S&S Service Center – About Us
Jerry’s Dad, Howard Holcom, started Holcom Auto Service in the early 1950’s, at a Phillips 66 gas station at 89th & Wornall Road. When Jerry was only five years old, he went to the shop with his dad and marveled at all of the tools and what he thought were complex mechanical parts involved with auto repair. As he grew older, Jerry spent summers helping his dad with anything he could.
When Holcom Auto Service was one of the first independent repair shops to get into the automatic transmission rebuilding business, Jerry was at his father’s side learning what made those transmissions work, what failed on them, and how to prevent future failures. In the late 1950’s, Howard opened a second shop at 8823 Troost, and as that business grew, he expanding it to six bays so that he could consolidate and move the entire business to one location.
Jerry worked at Holcom Auto Service after school and on weekends through his high school and college years, constantly trying to understand all he could about those mechanical wonders.
In 1972, Howard Holcom retired from the business and moved to Hermitage, MO. so he could relax. He offered the business to the then 22 year old Jerry, who was wise enough to know that he wasn’t yet qualified to run a thriving auto repair business.
So, Howard sold the business to George Solomon and Bill Schwindt, who renamed it S&S Service Center. Jerry continued to work for S&S for several more years, after which he left to try his hand at the auto dealerships. In 1982, while Jerry was working at a Chevrolet dealership, he heard that Bill Schwindt wanted to move to Colorado and would be selling S&S. Jerry and a financial partner bought back his father’s former business.
Jerry, along with former service manager, Reber Herdliska, continued to build the business by making sure the customers always came first.
In 1988, having nearly outgrown the facility at 89th & Troost, Jerry purchased a former Shakey’s Pizza parlor building at 8025 Troost. He had four bays added. Then Jerry, Reber, and several of their friends and relatives completely gutted the existing building and transformed it into the bright, modern auto repair facility it is today.

2007 Motor Age Magazine Top Ten Shop
One of the premier automotive trade magazines, Motor Age, selected
S&S Service Center as one of the top ten auto repair shops in the
country. The magazine had a two page spread highlighting S&S in their
September 2007 issue.
2006 ASA Missouri / Kansas Facility of the Year
S&S was selected the Top ASA member shop from the states of Missouri and Kansas in 2006. The selection criteria was shop appearance, professionalism, leadership in the automotive industry, community involvement, and high ratings on their measurable Customer Satisfaction Index.
1998 Greater Kansas City Small Business of the Year
S&S Service was also nominated three consecutive times for the Greater Kansas City Small Business of the Year. In 1998, they advanced through the first two cuts and were proud to be considered one of the top 100 small businesses in the metropolitan area.
1995 CARQUEST Excellence Award Winner
Every year, the CARQUEST Excellence Award recognizes the best repair shops in the country for their commitment to service excellence and enhancing the image of the professional technician. In 1996, during half-time at the CARQUEST Bowl, a very special event took place. Jerry Holcom, owner of S&S Service Center, was named the 1995 CARQUEST Excellence Award Winner. Jerry accepted his award on the field in a lavish half-time presentation, surrounded by the other finalists and NFL great Earl Morrall. When named owner of the “Best Shop in America,” Jerry commented, “I didn’t win it, my whole staff won it. I couldn’t do the things I do without their assistance.” Jerry has been invited to return as a member of the National Technician Advisory Council every year since, a true tribute to his dedication to excellence in the automotive repair industry.
NAPA / ASE Technician of the Year
Jerry has been nominated twice for the NAPA/ASE Technician of the Year award. He and S&S Service Center were picked as the regional winner both times. Jerry believes that qualified technicians are the key to the industry’s future success. He ‘walks his talk’ by putting his time and effort into his beliefs! He is an active advisory board member at two local community colleges, has served on the NATEF re-certification team for two of their programs, and participated in several local “career day” events, organizing booths with several pieces of hand-held computerized diagnostic equipment. This encourages students, instructors, and counselors to seriously consider the viability of automotive repair as a career.
1988 Motor Magazine Technician of the Year
In 1988 Jerry was honored as the Motor Magazine Technician of the Year by scoring the highest cumulative score on all eight ASE certification tests by anyone who passed their final test that year. Along with the Motor award, Jerry was chosen as the Fel-Pro Tech Pro of the Year for 1988.
1988 TTG Top Tech
Bryant Moyer was the 1988 TTG Top Tech at the Chevrolet dealer in which he was employed. Now S&S Service Center is proud to have Bryant to its specialized automotive team!
